White-crowned Sparrow

Zonotrichia leucophrys

- an abundant sparrow in winter fields and scrub in the southwestern U.S.; uncommon among flocks of the closely related White-throated Sparrow in the east

- only adults have the stricking black-and-white striped crown; immatures show much more tan and brown

- note the "crested" look to the head that makes them easy to identify regardless of age
