Streak-backed Oriole

Icterus pustulatus

- a rarity anywhere in the U.S., this bird was a sensation when it was discovered at the Gilbert Water Ranch 30 miles east of Phoenix, drawing birders from around the country when it wintered

- not only did it winter, but it returned the following winter as well

- this brightly colored bird was indifferent to people and often allowed very close approach

- often difficult to find as it fed in thick srub close to the ground
