Red-winged Blackbird

- widespread and familiar across the U.S.

- occurs in massive flocks in winter fields, often mixed with starlings and grackles and cowbirds, that number in the millions

- females are often an identification challenge to novice birders who think they are "large sparrows" because of the heavy streaking on the breast
