Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) is the medium sized accipiter in the U.S. Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus) has facial disks much like an owl to help it hear prey in grasslands. Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) occurs throughout the U.S. and has a variety of plumages. Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) is a western species. White-tailed Kite (Elanus leucurus) is a western species. Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) is wide spread and a master at soaring on rising thermals. Although previously thought to be related to hawks it is now considered closer to storks. All images taken at various locations in AZ and NM.
