Loggerhead Shrike
- a songbird that lives the lifestyle of a hawk, catching small prey from insects to lizards and snakes to ssmall birds
- uses notched bill to kill prey; takes it to thorny bush or barbed wire and impales it for dismemberment
- "song" consists of a series of harsh notes and is likely the origin of the name
- regurgitates undigestable parts of meal as a pellet (shown in LOSH 068)
- usually seen as solitary bird at top of small tree in open country
- range declining in U.S. as habitat disappears
- close relative the Northern Shrike slightly larger and has heavier bill; seen in upper tier states in winter primarily
- resembles Northern Mockingbird in size and colors, but large headed and behaves differently
- all images made in AZ and NM
